Jake Sherman of Punchbowl News and Mosheh “Mo” Oinounou of Mo News join us for a special LIVE Election Day episode of Being Jewish with Jonah Platt. Together, they will get to the bottom of who Jews and everyone can trust for their news. Punchbowl News is the Capitol Hill news outlet Sherman co-founded with his Politico Playbook partner Anna Palmer, built to cover Congress and nothing else. Mo News is the independent news brand Oinounou started on Instagram after leaving CBS News, now with a daily podcast.

Recorded live at the Edlavitch DC JCC, a Capital J program, Jonah Platt sits down with two leading independent news founders who started as undergrads at George Washington University’s The Hatchet, then went on to Politico and CBS News before leaving to build their own platforms. Why did they walk away from the biggest names in news? And with trust in the media at historic lows, why should anyone believe them?

Jonah Platt pushes both on where being fair ends and being neutral begins, whether a Jewish journalist owes it to the audience to cover Jewish stories or should stay far away from them. They get into what it’s like to explain Israel to an audience that has never met a Jew, what members of Congress actually know about the issues they vote on, and where they say politicians and reporters are getting their information. Then Jonah Platt asks which worries them more, the far left or the far right, and whether Israel will decide a single race this November. As always, we end with Jonah’s famous lightning round: bagels, delis, and a favorite Jewish holiday that surprised even them.
