Being Jewish with Jonah Platt: Gad Saad
Dr. Gad Saad joins Jonah Platt on Being Jewish with Jonah Platt to explain suicidal empathy, the idea behind his New York Times bestseller Suicidal Empathy: Dying to Be Kind, and why he says Jew hatred followed him from Beirut to Montreal and finally out of Canada.
Jonah Platt sits down with the evolutionary psychologist for a conversation that is part psychology lecture, part survivor’s account, and part warning. Gad Saad (@GadSaad ) takes Jonah through what it was like to grow up Jewish in Lebanon, what he lived through in Canada, and the moment he realized he could no longer walk onto his own campus. Along the way: a story from his college years that he says explains how people can like you while still seeing you through a stereotype, a surprising claim about what Canada won’t let him do to protect himself, and a candid look at where he lands on the political spectrum.
Jonah Platt then asks the question many American Jews are afraid to ask: what would have to change here so that we don’t end up in the same place as Canada? The answer comes with some good news and some bad news.
This is Being Jewish with Jonah Platt.
